なぜ「アブストラクト」が必要か？
今日「アブストラクト」とは様々な場面でよく使われている。大学院で博士号取得の際は必須であるが、学業成績の最後に論文アブストラクトを記載する事は海外では今や当たり前の事である。また、フルブライトの申請の際は希望する研究内容のタイトルとアブストラクトを添付する事が義務付けられている。
このようにアブストラクトは博士号の取得からノーベル賞の審査まで幅広く用いられ、学者としてのキャリアを積むには、その全ての段階で必ず使われているものである。つまり「アブストラクト」とは国際的研究者として認められるために、なくてはならない手段であると言えよう。
ここ数年、ハーバード大学などでは「アブストラクト」というのは、論文や記事の内容は要約（summary)ではなく、研究の意義（significance)や学術発見、研究方法等が中心となり「アブストラクト」自体も短くなってきている傾向にある（100−250 words 程度）。
「アブストラクト」とは大学院生や研究者にとって自分のPRのチャンスであり、さらに自分の研究の特異性をはっきりさせる機会でもある。その上、 英語で書かれた「アブストラクト」をHPなどに載せれば、世界中の学者がGoogle, Yahoo等を利用することで、自分の研究の成果をグローバルなacademic communityにすぐアクセスさせる事が可能になる。
Today abstracts are used in a wide number of situations, from graduate school to grant applications to Fulbright applications, requires an abstract. The abstract is essential as your career as a scholar progresses, from finishing the doctorate to being considered for a Nobel Prize. The English abstract is essential for becoming an international scholar.
In recent years the abstract has become more than a summary of the contents of a thesis or an article; the significance of the research, the scholarly discoveries and the research methodology have become the focus, while there has been a trend for the abstract itself to become shorter (100-250 words in length).
The ‘abstract’ is also become an important chance to promote the graduate student or researcher, an indispensable opportunity to make clear the special character of one’s own research. In addition, by up-loading an abstract written in English onto a website, scholars internationally will find it using search engines like Google and Yahoo, and the fruits of your research will become accessible to the global academic community.
＜コース概要＞
今回のコースでは、ワークショップのかたちで100−250ワードのアブストラクトの簡単な書き方を提案する。ワークショップの基本方針は自分の研究成果の核を絞り込み、更に磨き込んでコンパクトな「アブストラクト」にまとめる事である。表題は「英語」によるアブストラクトの書き方であるが目的は「研究の考え方」を徹底学習する事である。そのため理解しやすいよう講座は基本的に日本語で行う。「考え方」が身についた時点で研究のグローバル化のために英語での表現を試みる。
ここでは特に高度な英語力は必要とされないが「アブストラクト」の雛形に沿った英語での簡潔な表現を学ぶ。
「アブストラクト」は自分の完成した、あるいはほぼ完成した論文（ゼミのレポート、修士、博士論文）に基づいて考察する。
最終的にこのコースでは学術誌や学術会議、奨学金や就職申込書等、研究成果を国際的にアピールするために有効な、英語による「アブストラクト」の書き方を学ぶ。
その上でこの「アブストラクト」をいかに5〜7分の「パワーポイント」でまとめるかを指導する。
This is an intensive workshop in which the student will learn how to write an English abstract of 100-250 words. The basic objective of the workshop is to assist the student to sharpen and shape their most important research ideas into the short format of the abstract. This course is fundamentally about how to think rigorously about your research. The classes are mostly conducted in Japanese but aims to produce an English language abstract that articulates research thinking for a global audience.
There is no need for strong English language skills to participate in the workshop. The student will be able to use a specially devised abstract template that simplifies the English needed.
The abstract will be based on their own completed or nearly completed research (seminar paper, masters or doctoral thesis).
At the end of the course, the students will have learnt how to write an English abstract that can be used for scholarly journals, conference and grant applications, job applications, and to promote their research internationally. They will also have learn how to adapt their abstract to make a 5-7 minute Powerpoint presentation.

＜受講条件＞
事前に自分が完成した、あるいは完成途中のゼミのレポートや修士、博士論文について、自分なりに日本語で「アブストラクト」を書き、それに出来れば英語による「アブストラクト」を付けた試案を準備する事。
1. コースは基本的に日本語で行う。
2. このコースは基本的に学生による「討論」が主体となる。
3. 専門の分野は問わないが、全ての人々がその分野の専門用語や概念等を理解出来るような準備が必要である。
4. クラスは20人名を定員とし、博士課程学生を優先とする。
5. アブストラクト構築に当たり、その内容に関しては各自指導教授による研究内容の正当性等の確認を前提とする。アブストラクトに書かれる研究内容自体に関しての責任は各自に帰するものとする。
Course Requirements
Students should bring a draft of an abstract in Japanese for a completed seminar paper or masters or doctoral thesis to the first class. They should also try to write a first draft of an English abstract as well.
1. The course will be conducted primarily in Japanese.
2. The course will be taught as a workshop, with active participation of each student.
3. There are no limitations on field or academic discipline. However, the student should be prepared to explain discipline-specific terms and ideas to a broader audience.
4. The enrolment will be limited to 20 students. Priority will be given to doctoral students.
5. The student will be expected to consult with their own research supervisor to verify the academic accuracy of the completed abstract. Responsibility for the content of the abstract will remain with the student.
